Cobb’s performing arts magnet accepting applications

January 27, 2011 2 comments

Cobb County students looking for immersion in the performing arts can apply now to the Cobb County Center for Excellence in the Performing Arts.

CCCEPA, located at Pebblebrook High School in Mableton, gives students two hours per day of classical training in voice, dance or drama. The school is holding visits and auditions this spring.

Note: If the official visit or audition date for your home school as listed on the schedule has passed, don’t despair. I’ve been assured by Frank Timmerman, the director, that he schedules auditions individually.

Magnet application schedule for Clayton County schools

January 26, 2011 Leave a comment

Registration is open now for Clayton County’s fine arts and science magnet schools, and will open soon for its year-round school.

Fine Arts Magnet High School is accepting applications through this Friday, Jan. 28.

Rex Mill Middle School, Clayton’s science magnet, has opened its registration process for rising 6th graders (current 5th graders). The application deadline is Feb. 25.

Elite Scholars Academy will open its lottery registration — which will be online only — on Feb. 21. Their web site says registration will be open “for several weeks” but doesn’t give a closing date.

For those interested in the International Baccalaureate programs at Lovejoy or North Clayton high schools, I’m afraid I got to this a little late — their deadlines passed earlier this month. Sorry.

For links to the web sites of any of these schools, visit the Clayton County Schools page on this site.

Open house Sunday at North Springs High School

January 3, 2011 Leave a comment

This Sunday, you can get a closer look at North Springs High School — part of the Fulton County School system, but certainly not your average high school, and not just for Fulton County residents.

North Springs is a charter school that is a magnet school in both the arts (visual and performing) and sciences. Located in Sandy Springs, it is open to students from anywhere in Fulton County, with some restrictions (see their admissions page to get the whole picture). Students who live outside Fulton County may also attend North Springs if space is available, although these families must pay to attend. (For 2009-10, the fee was $6,300.)

The school will host an open house on Jan. 9 from 2-5 p.m. The school principal, teachers and students will be on campus to meet prospective families. Call 770-551-2490 for more details.

Wetland ecology class for high-school credit

December 27, 2010 Leave a comment

High-school students looking for a hands-on science experience can still apply for the wetland ecology class at Fernbank’s Advanced Studies program. Unfortunately, coordinator Denise Savage said that’s the only class with spaces for spring semester.

Denise said that the ornithology class on the schedule won’t be taught because there wasn’t enough student interest. If you have a child interested in birds — and maybe they have a few friends with a similar interest — you could contact her to see if they might reconsider that decision and open the class.

Advanced Studies classes are open to high-school students who have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The classes, which are held after regular school hours, earn school credit. Students who attend DeKalb County schools can take the classes for no charge; there is a fee for those outside the county system.

Free science classes at Fernbank

July 26, 2010 Leave a comment

High-school students can register now for the Advanced Studies after-school program at Fernbank Science Center. Classes are free of charge for any DeKalb County Schools student, and students earn course credits for taking them.

Fall 2010 classes are:

  • Ornithology
  • Ecosystems Alive
  • Stream Ecology
  • Forensic Science

In the spring semester, the program will offer:

  • Ornithology
  • Biology of Amphibians and Reptiles
  • Wetland Ecology
  • Forensic Science

The program also has classes that span the entire 2010-11 school year:

  • Physics
  • Forensics
  • Science of Food
  • Robotics and Engineering (I and II)

To register, you’ll need to download an application from the Advanced Studies web site. Students must have a GPA of at least 3.0 to qualify. With the application, you’ll need to submit a recommendation from a science teacher, have your school counselor submit a transcript, and write a brief essay about why you want to enroll in the class.

Ms. Savage, who handles registration, says the program has no deadline, but classes fill up quickly. (One class, chemistry, is already closed.) If you have questions, you can reach her at (678) 874-7107.
