The Emory National Debate Institute has released its schedule of summer programs for 2011, with programs for rising 6th graders and up.

For rising middle-school students (entering 6th, 7th or 8th grade), Emory is holding a two-week camp at Pace Academy.

Rising high-school students can choose from several programs on the Emory campus. Choices include a two-week camp, recommended for rising freshmen and those who are new to debate; a four-week institute for rising sophomores; and six-week institutes for rising juniors and seniors.

In all camps, students will focus on key elements of debate, including research, analysis and public speaking.

Registration for the high-school programs will close on April 1, 2011.

The Savannah College for Art and Design (SCAD) is now taking applications for its summer programs, ranging from art camps for younger kids to intensive art instruction for high-school students.

Rising 10th, 11th and 12th graders can apply to the SCAD Summer Seminar, which will offer two, one-week sessions at the Atlanta campus. Each student selects two workshops to attend for the week, in topics such as painting,  drawing, fashion or storytelling. The workshops provide a combination of instruction and hands-on studio time. Students can choose to live on campus, or not. The application deadline is May 1, but workshop spaces are granted on a first-come, first-served basis, so it’s better to apply earlier.

For rising seniors, SCAD offers Rising Star, a five-week, residential program held at the college’s Savannah campus. In this highly selective program, students take two, college-level courses for which they can earn college credit. Class choices include drawing, computer art, architecture and photography. The application deadline is April 15.

Students ages 7-14 can attend Art Smarts, week-long art camps which will be held on the campus of the Galloway School in the Buckhead / North Atlanta area. (UPDATE 4/17/14: The Art Smarts program has been discontinued.)

Rising juniors and seniors with an interest in epidemiology — the study of health epidemics and how they spread — can apply now to CDC Disease Detective Camp, held on the Atlanta campus of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The five-day camp gives students a behind-the-scenes look at how the CDC tracks infectious diseases and works to protect public health.

The application deadline is April 15.

High-school students with an interest in biomedical science are encouraged to apply to the Vivien Thomas Summer Program at the Morehouse School of Medicine.

The six-week program pairs students with faculty mentors and allows them to work as apprentices in biomedical research labs. The program’s overarching mission is to increase the number of minority students interested in biomedical science.

Applications will be available in March. Program coordinator Wanda Harvey suggests that interested students contact her now at (404) 752-1843. She will add your name to her mailing list and will mail you an application packet when they are ready.

If you prefer, you can use the application that will be posted online next month, but you will need to contact Ms. Harvey for additional information. (Applicants must write a summary of a scientific article, and you’ll need Ms. Harvey to give you a link to that article.)

The application deadline will be April 8, 2011.

The Emory University School of Medicine is now accepting registrations for its Summer Science Academy, open to students who will be in high school in the 2011-12 school year.

The academy, which is operated by the Office of Multicultural Medical Student Affairs, is an effort to open the world of science to girls and members of minority groups, who are statistically under-represented in scientific professions. However, all students are welcome, without regard for gender,  race or ethnicity.

The two-week program offers lectures, labs and field experiences in scientific areas including chemistry, biology, genetics and human disease. Students can attend a day program or choose a residential program and live on the Emory University campus.

The deadline to apply for the residential program is Feb. 25. Applicants will be selected based on their interest level, grades and letters of recommendation.

For the day program, the registration deadline is April 15, but it could close earlier if all spaces are filled.

Financial assistance may be available.

iD (Internal Drive) Gaming Academy will bring its residential and day camp programs in video game design and other computer-related technologies to the Emory University campus this summer.

Students ages 13-18 can attend iD’s two-week residential camps, which provide intensive training in a single area of game development: 3-D modeling, game programming or level design. Camps will be held July 3-15 and July 17-29. Campers live on campus in Emory dorms. Cost is $3,299 per two-week session.

Emory will also host a number of iD Tech Camps, which are day camps with some overnight options. These week-long camps for kids 7-17 focus on topics in video game design, web design, video editing, programming and robotics. Camp fees are $799-$899 per week.

iD is offering $75 off camp registrations until Jan. 31. They also offer a $50 discount for siblings or for multiple weeks.
