Enrollment for DeKalb school lotteries begins Monday
Hoping to send your child to one of DeKalb’s magnet schools for high achievers next year? Or maybe a charter or International Baccalaureate school?
Open enrollment begins Monday for most of the county’s magnet, Monetssori and charter schools. You can register for the lottery at the school of your choice through the online parent portal.
(Note: To use online registration, you will need an account with the ePortal system. If you don’t already have an account, you can create one, but you will need to enter your child’s student number and GTID number. These can be found on your child’s progress report, or you can contact your school’s registrar for the information.)
Enrollment will remain open through April 1. The lotteries will be held in May and early June.
Academic contest for 4th graders this Saturday
Gwinnett Place Mall will host an academic quiz competition for 4th graders this Saturday, March 12, 2011.
The Mega GoldenBell Academic Quiz is sponsored by Mega Mart. Contestants will be asked questions in a spelling-bee-style format, where a wrong answer results in elimination. The winner will receive a Nintendo DSI XL and a $500 donation to his or her school.
The contest is limited to 40 participants. To register your child, e-mail Kelly Zhao of Mega Mart.
Gifted Education Press Quarterly spring issue is online now
Gifted Education Press Quarterly has posted its Spring 2011 issue. GEPQ is a free, online publication that focuses on high-level matters of gifted education policy and pedagogy.
The current issue includes an article on excuses that are commonly given for not allowing advanced students to fully develop their math ability — and why those excuses may not hold water; and an article on why gifted students need to be taught by gifted-certified teachers.
If you like GEPQ, you can sign up to be notified whenever a new issue is posted by sending an e-mail request to the publisher.
Register now for spring and summer classes at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center
Registration opens today for spring classes at the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center in Northeast Atlanta. Children can take classes in the visual arts, dance or music.
Callanwolde also has a summer camp which offers courses in music, dance, drama and visual arts. Registration is open now.
And by the way, if you’d like to expand your own horizons, Callanwolde has adult classes in music, visual arts, fitness and writing. It’s also a great place to view artistic works, hear poetry readings or storytelling, and attend concerts.
Bio@Tech offers high-school students an intensive biology experience
Georgia Tech has opened registration for Bio@Tech, a three-week summer program that allows high-school students to study advanced topics in the biological sciences.
The slate for the 2011 Bio@Tech includes DNA forensics, plankton ecology, DNA sequencing, and the study of microbes found in harsh environments.
Bio@Tech is open to rising 11th and 12th graders, although “exceptional rising 10th graders will also be considered,” according to the web site. Application is competitive and requires two teacher recommendations and a student essay. The application period closes April 22, 2011.
Enrollment is open for Appalachian Institute residential summer enrichment camp
I usually limit my summer camp posts to those in and around metro Atlanta, but the residential camp at the Appalachian Institute for Creative Learning is too intriguing for me not to mention.
Open to kids ages 8-17 (rising 3rd-12th graders), AICL’s summer program is held on the campus of Warren Wilson College, near Asheville, N.C. Campers choose four classes from dozens of choices in math, science, technology, literature, history, visual arts, music and drama.
Children do not need to be certified as gifted to attend. Enrollment is open now.
Scholarships available for gifted programs, including summer camps
I’ve been posting about lots of summer programs lately. If you’ve explored some options, you’ve seen that they can get quite expensive. Today, I wanted to let you know about a scholarship that can be used for gifted programs, including summer programs.
The Board of Trustees Scholarship is offered through the National Society for the Gifted and Talented, which happens to be the parent company that operates the Summer Institute for the Gifted. NSGT will award six scholarships to deserving candidates — two each in the amounts of $250, $500 and $1,000. Summer programs are not the only eligible uses for the funds. They may also be used for online or weekend programs, or for individual research projects.
Applications are due April 1, 2011.
